Fred
Quistgard has been teaching the art of goaltending since 1978,
Fred’s philosophy of combining life skills, game knowledge and
attention to details with skill development allows students to
develop into well-rounded goaltenders. As in life, goaltending is
all about making informed choices and understanding the consequences
of one’s actions within a game. One style of goaltending does not
fit all so the way to get better is to learn how to bring out the
best of your own ability and style and not to emulate others if
their style is not naturally “you”.
Fred has a long
history in many levels of ice hockey. He has been a collegiate head
coach (Union College and Bowdoin College women’s ice hockey teams),
associate head men’s hockey coach (Southern New Hampshire
University), assistant coach at UNH, St. Anselm’s, New England
College, the University of Southern Maine, St. Paul’s School and
Phillips Exeter Academy. Fred helped coach the U.S. Women’s National
Ice Hockey Team to a silver medal at the 1994 World Championships.
He also served as goalie coach for the Johnstown Chiefs, the former
affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Fred head coached the Team New
Hampshire Boys’ High School All-Star Team to a national championship
at the Chicago Showcase Tournament in 1991. Fred has written
goaltending articles for the Hockey USA newspaper since 1985 and has
written for From The Crease magazine and many others.
Fred is
available for private lessons and clinics at your practice ice, Fred
also provides synthetic ice lessons at the PHIT 360 gym in
